4 Tips For Your Newborn Photo Session

filed in

Adding a precious new baby to your family is such a sweet season, and certainly one you want to document. Newborn photo sessions are a wonderful way to capture those special first moments and create memories that will last a lifetime. As a mom of 3, I love being able to look at the little details and features of each of my babies. I’m so grateful that I have a snapshot of them when they were tiny and new. As you begin to plan for your newborn’s photo session, here are some tips to keep in mind:

Tip 1: Timing is everything.

The best time to schedule a newborn photo session is when your baby is between 7 and 14 days old. During this time, your baby will still be very sleepy and will curl up naturally, making it easier to pose them. If you wait too long, your baby will become more alert and may not be as cooperative during the photo session.

Tip 2: What to wear.

Dress your newborn in loose, comfortable clothing. Choose clothing that is easy to remove for the photo session, such as a onesie or swaddle. Avoid dressing your newborn in clothes with several buttons, snaps, or other fasteners that could disturb them during the session. It’s also a good idea to bring a few extra outfits in case of accidents or spills. For other members of the family, if you’re a KFP client, you’ll have access to our client wardrobe with options for everyone. If you’re selecting your own clothing, I recommend light and neutral colors that coordinate well.

Tip 3: When to feed.

Feed your newborn shortly before the session. It’s important to ensure that your newborn is content and not hungry during the photo shoot. A well-fed baby is more likely to fall asleep and stay asleep during the session, which will make it easier to pose them and capture beautiful images. Of course, if you need to feed baby again during the session, that is perfectly fine and we have a private area for you in the KFP studio. Our sessions are baby-led, so while we try to prepare beforehand as much as possible, we do allow the baby to lead and ensure that he/she stays comfortable and content.

Tip 4: During the session.

During your newborn session, try to be patient and flexible. Newborns can be unpredictable, so it’s important to go with the flow and be willing to stop and attend to the baby’s needs if necessary. We set the studio up to be warm and calming, with a sound machine and the heat bumped up a few degrees, to make babies as comfy as possible. But sometimes newborns still become fussy, and that is perfectly okay. We’re prepared to stop for a bit and try again when baby is happy.

Newborn photo sessions are a special and fleeting moment in time. With a little planning and preparation, we can capture beautiful and timeless images of your newborn that you will cherish for years to come.
