There is something so special about combining milestone photos with a family session. While it’s fun to celebrate a baby’s first birthday, it’s also a chance to document the people who have spent the last year loving, cheering, and growing right alongside them.
This sweet family chose UT Gardens for their session, and it was the perfect setting for marking such a big milestone. With spring greenery in full bloom and colorful flowers around every corner, the gardens created a beautiful backdrop without taking attention away from what mattered most—their little boy.
And let me tell you, this guy had personality.
Some babies spend most of their session quietly observing what’s going on around them. Not this one. He came ready with the chunkiest smiles and the happiest expressions. Every time mom or dad made a funny noise, his whole face would light up. It didn’t take much convincing to get him giggling, and those genuine reactions are always my favorite.
One-year sessions are such a unique age to photograph. Babies are curious, constantly on the move, and showing more of their personalities than ever before. They’re no longer sleepy newborns, but they’re not quite toddlers either. It’s a stage that feels like it passes in the blink of an eye.
One of the reasons I love combining milestone and family photos is because parents are often so focused on celebrating their child’s growth that they forget they’re part of the story too. A first birthday isn’t just a milestone for a baby—it’s a milestone for mom and dad. They’ve spent a year learning, adapting, and building memories together as a family.
As we wandered through UT Gardens, we captured plenty of portraits of the birthday boy, but some of my favorite images from the session were the moments of connection between all three of them. The cuddles, the laughs, and the way this little guy looked so content in his parents’ arms.
The flowers may have been beautiful, but this sweet family—and one very smiley soon-to-be one-year-old—were definitely the stars of the show.
