How to Choose a Location for Your Portrait Session

filed in

Of all the decisions we make when planning for a portrait session, the location is one of the most important. The location can set the tone for the entire shoot and greatly impact the final outcome of the images. Whether you choose to use our studio, an outdoor setting, or the comfort of your own home, each location option will produce different results. As a professional photographer in Knoxville, I’ve captured countless family portraits in various settings and in this blog post, I want to explore the benefits of choosing a studio, outdoor, or in-home family photography session. So, if you’re trying to decide which location is best for your upcoming family photo shoot, keep reading!

One of the biggest benefits of a studio session is the controlled environment. In the studio, I have complete control over the lighting, temperature, and other factors that can impact the quality of the images, as well as your experience during the session. The studio is stocked with everything families need to feel right at home. We have a refrigerator stocked with cold drinks and snacks for toddlers, as well as toys to keep little ones entertained. The wardrobe is also stored at the studio, so if we need to make a last minute outfit change, we can! Being in the studio allows us to take our time.

I can photograph at the studio rain or shine and at any time of day, which means sessions never need to be rescheduled. This also means that we can achieve consistent, beautiful lighting throughout the entire session, without worrying about the sun being too harsh or setting too soon.

Session Location – Outdoor Location

Now let’s talk about the benefits of an outdoor family session. Especially during certain seasons, it’s hard to compete with the beautiful backdrop of East TN. Beautiful gardens and fields in the spring and changing leaves in the fall create a stunning canvas for family photos. I have a list of go-to spots in Knoxville that provide the best combination of natural light and privacy, and they are some of my favorite places to shoot.

Another benefit of an outside family session is the opportunity for candid and spontaneous moments. When you’re outside in a beautiful natural setting, your family can interact and play together in a way that may not be possible in a studio environment. This can lead to some truly special and memorable moments that are captured in your family portraits.

Finally, let’s talk about the benefits of an in-home family session. One of the biggest advantages of an in-home session is that it takes place in your own familiar environment, where you and your family feel most comfortable. This can be especially helpful if you have young children or pets who may be easily distracted or uncomfortable in new settings.

This type of setting allows for a personal and intimate atmosphere. We can capture your family in your own space, with your own unique decor and style, which makes for a truly personalized experience. I love capturing the everyday activities of families, from playing with favorite toys to baking in the kitchen. An in-home session can be personalized to your family dynamic and rhythm.

Lastly, an in-home session can be scheduled at any time of day, making it a convenient option for families with busy schedules or for those who simply prefer to stay at home.

So, there you have it – the benefits of a studio, outdoor or in-home family photography session. Ultimately, the decision of which location to choose depends on your family’s individual needs and preferences. As a photographer, my goal is to capture the authentic love and connection between your family, and I’m here to help you create beautiful and timeless memories that you’ll cherish for years to come, no matter the location.
